The Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO) proudly announces the celebration of a comprehensive week-long training session designed for Middle East communities that took place in Geneva from 24 to 28 June 2024. This program aimed to empower participants with essential skills and knowledge to effectively engage with the different mechanisms of the United Nations (UN) to improve their advocacy efforts.
The training session addresseed a range of critical topics, including:
- UN Mechanisms: An in-depth exploration of how various UN bodies function,including different paths minorities could engage with such as special rapporteurs, Universal Periodic Review or indigenous mechanisms enabling participants to understand and navigate the complex UN system.
- Effective Engagement with the UN: Strategies and best practices for interacting with UN representatives and making impactful contributions to discussions and initiatives.
- Participation in the Human Rights Council Sessions: participants were able to attend some sessions as a guide on how to engage in the Human Rights Council sessions, including how to present issues, submit reports, and utilize opportunities for advocacy.
- Digital Security for Activists: A significant emphasis of the training was on digital security, recognizing the critical need for activists to protect themselves against online threats. These sessions were practical workshops focused on simple practices and tools to work more safely and privately. The courses covered:
- 1. Basic Security for Defenders Online and in Digital World
- 2. Strategies and Policies to Mitigate Cyber-Risks: Tools and Apps
- 3. Mobile Phone: More Privacy and Security for Human Rights Defenders
Following our commitment to empowering marginalized communities this training is a significant step towards ensuring that voices from the Middle East are heard and respected within international human rights mechanisms.
