The UNPO recently participated in the 18th session of the Forum on Minority Issues in Geneva. This year’s focus was “The contribution of minorities to diverse, resilient, and peaceful societies.” UNPO delivered a statement under Item 2, which addressed the recognition of minorities’ full contribution to the economic, social, cultural, political, and institutional fabric of society. In its statement, UNPO stressed the critical need for unrepresented peoples to have meaningful participation at all levels.
Across the world, unrepresented communities are systematically excluded from decisions that shape their lives. They are denied the right to self-determination and are often misrepresented or overlooked in economic, social, cultural, and political structures. While not inherently minorities, peoples have been minoritised through historical, social, and political processes, yet their knowledge, perspectives, and lived experiences are vital for building just, equitable, and resilient societies.
UNPO stressed that equal representation and meaningful participation of unrepresented peoples are essential for sustainable and inclusive societies. “Without the full contribution of unrepresented peoples, policies and frameworks frequently fail to protect their rights and reflect their perspectives, knowledge, and lived realities. At the same time, their participation enriches governance, social cohesion, and development. Inclusion strengthens democratic pluralism, enhances policy legitimacy, and ensures societies develop in ways that are truly just and inclusive”.
UNPO called on Member States and stakeholders to actively recognise, respect, and value the perspectives of unrepresented peoples. This includes safeguarding cultural, economic, social, and political rights, empowering communities through inclusive decision-making, investing in local leadership, and respecting self-determination as a cornerstone for building peaceful and resilient societies.
Through its engagement at the Forum, UNPO affirms its ongoing commitment to standing in solidarity with unrepresented peoples, advocating for their fundamental rights, and promoting their right to self-determination by ensuring inclusion at all levels of governance.
