On 23 September 2019, the UNPO and its member organization, Assemblea Nacional Catalana (ANC), will hold a side-event at the annual OSCE Human Dimension Implementation Meeting, Europe’s biggest human rights conference, to present the findings of the various international experts who have studied the trials of the political and civil society leaders involved in the 2017 Catalan independence referendum. The event will commence with the screening of the documentary, the Catalonia Trial: Justice or Vengence?, with the participation of the Executive Producer of the documentary, Callum Macrae of Outsider TV. The documentary will provide the basis on which a discussion will be had related to the fairness of the trial, looking at, for instance the findings of the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, the observers of the Internatioanl Trial Watch process, international experts on the extradition proceedings, and the joint submission to the UN Office of the High Commissioner of Human Rights made by the UNPO and ANC in advance of the UN Human Rights Committee’s periodic review of Spain’s compliance with international human rights law. The event is extremely timely, as judgment is expected in the trials at any moment.
