Xi Jinping’s Proposed Policy Direction on Tibet Misguided: CTA President
CTA President Dr. Lobsang Sangay refuted Chinese President Xi Jinping’s proposed policy directions on Tibet and called it “misguided” and “unrealistic”. Xi Jinping has laid out four key policy directions on Tibet which include combating ‘Separatism’ and ‘Sinicizing Tibetan Buddhism, at the 7th Central Symposium on Tibet Works in Beijing on Saturday, 29 August. Tibetan Community Leader and His Nephew Arrested After Defying Chinese Order
A Tibetan community leader and his nephew were arrested in Qinghai’s Tridu county after they urged fellow local Tibetans to resist Chinese land grab. Bu Dokyab and his nephew Gyaltsen were taken to custody on 21 August and later to a detention center. Read more
A Major Religious Festival Held Under Heavy Security in Lhasa
The Shoton, or Yogurt Festival, runs from 19 to 24 August this year but the festival was held under heavy security with fewer numbers of Tibetans allowed to attend this year. Read more
Tibetan Woman Released in Failing Health After Serving Full Prison Term in Chinese Prison
A Tibetan woman named Dolkar who was convicted of sharing news of the protest by her nephew Wangchen in May last year was released on 15 August with failing health conditions. Dolkar was jailed for 15 months for spreading the word of her nephew’s call for the release of the 11th Panchen Lama. Read more
China’s Panchen Lama Visits Lhasa, Tibet
Gyaltsen Norbu, the Chinese state-appointed Panchen Lama recently visited Lhasa, the capital city of Tibet on 31 July. He rarely visits Tibet and visits such as this one are carefully state-managed and heavily policed. During his visit, he started various religious events and social activities in the so-called Tibet Autonomous Region. Read more
Access to the TAR and Other Tibetan Areas Did Not Improve in 2019: US State Department
The Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs, US Department of State has submitted its annual report to Congress under Section 4 of the Reciprocal Access to Tibet Act. The report mentioned the Chinese government’s systematic impediment of travel to the Tibetan Autonomous Region (TAR) and Tibetan areas outside the TAR for U.S. diplomats and officials, journalists, and tourists in 2019.
