The Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO) expresses its solidarity with the people of Somaliland and supports the growing international recognition of their long-standing political reality.
Since 1991, Somaliland has built resilient institutions, maintained internal security, conducted multiple democratic elections, and preserved social cohesion in a highly volatile regional environment. Today, it stands as one of the most stable and peaceful political entities on the African continent—an achievement grounded in internal dialogue, non-violence, and local ownership of political processes. For more than three decades, the people of Somaliland have pursued their aspirations through peaceful, democratic, and inclusive means, building institutions, maintaining stability, and upholding fundamental rights. Their experience reflects the universal principle that all peoples possess an inherent and inalienable right to self-determination, as enshrined in international law.
UNPO affirms that the right to self-determination is neither selective nor conditional. All peoples and nations are entitled to recognition and to a safe and enabling environment in which they can freely determine their political status and pursue their economic, social, and cultural development without coercion or exclusion. UNPO continues to stand for the respect of human rights, the rule of law, and the peaceful exercise of the right to self-determination. The organization remains in opposition to violations of international humanitarian and human rights law worldwide and continues to advocate for the protection of civilians, accountability, and dignity for all peoples.
At a time of global uncertainty, UNPO urges the international community to uphold self-determination as a universal right, exercised peacefully and democratically, and to engage with political realities in a principled and consistent manner. Respect for this right is essential to preventing conflict, strengthening resilience, and securing long-term peace.
UNPO stands with the people of Somaliland and reaffirms its commitment to supporting unrepresented peoples and nations worldwide in their peaceful pursuit of dignity, rights, and a meaningful voice in international affairs. In this spirit, UNPO acknowledges this recognition as a significant and well-earned step for the people of Somaliland and stands in solidarity with their continued pursuit of international legitimacy, peace, and democratic self-rule.
