Re-Imagining Self-Determination
Why Self-Determination Matters
According to the UN Charter and the ICCPR, the right to self-determination is a fundamental principle of international law and is expressly recognized as a right for all peoples. For the UNPO, self-determination is understood as the right of peoples to determine their own destiny and to have a voice in the form of their economic, cultural and social development, including their political status. For the UNPO, the importance of this right lies in the right of choice, with this choice potentially leading to different outcomes for each community.
The respect for self-determination among peoples is essential for the welfare and sustainability of democratic and pluralistic societies because it empowers individuals and communities to shape their own political, economic, social, and cultural futures. Self-determination is the bedrock of true democracy by ensuring that all voices, especially those of minority groups and marginalized communities, are heard and considered in decision-making processes. When peoples have the right to determine their own destiny, it fosters a sense of ownership, legitimacy, and commitment to the political system, which are crucial for a stable and inclusive democratic governance.
Self-determination encompasses cultural security, self-governance, economic autonomy, gender inclusivity, environmental stewardship, among other vital aspects. It’s about ensuring dignity and freedom of expression for diverse communities worldwide. In the face of shifting geopolitical paradigms, self-determination also addresses the impacts of climate crises, the rise of autocratic states, and the challenges posed by new technologies.
Our Goal
To critically reevaluate and adapt the concept of self-determination in response to contemporary geopolitical challenges. This way, we ensure it remains a relevant and effective tool for promoting the rights and aspirations of unrepresented peoples and nations in a rapidly changing global landscape emphasizing its role as a catalyst for peace and resilience in the face of global challenges.
Objectives
- Promote Understanding: We strive to deepen awareness of self-determination as a cornerstone of peace, fostering dialogue and education on its significance.
- Facilitate Dialogue: We create platforms for constructive discussions, engaging stakeholders to rethink the forms of self-determination in today’s context. This involves addressing the threats posed by misinformation, hate speech, increasing authoritarian practices to silence representatives of peoples and nations at national and international stage, cyber-attacks and digital sabotage.
- Advocate for Non-Violence: We support UNPO members in their peaceful advocacy for self-determination, fostering sustainable change.
Taking Action
By bridging academia, international actors, and UNPO members, we seek to understand the impact of denying self-determination and explore innovative implementation methods.
Through public campaigns and workshops, we encourage fresh perspectives on self-determination, addressing its intersections with political, social, economic, and cultural rights. We emphasize the importance of not only protecting identities against assimilation policies but allowing nations and peoples to re-own its own narratives.
We share research findings and policy papers, enriching the discourse on self-determination and its practical implications. Our publications address a range of topics, from democratic rights to environmental justice.
