Inner Mongolia: CMA Sends Drought Working Group

On August 14 [2009], China Meteorological Administration (CMA) sent experts from National Climate Center, National Climate Center and Institute of Strategic Development and Overall Planning to Inner Mongolia, Liaoning, Jilin and other drought-hit areas to deploy the local drought relief work.

It is reported that from August 1 to 16 [2009], the precipitation of most places of Northeast China, eastern Inner Mongolia and most places of North China was less than 50mm. The precipitation of some places was even less than 10mm. The average precipitation of Liaoning, Jilin and Inner Mongolia was 10, 15 and 16.1mm, all of which has been the minimum since 1951 and was 90%, 80% and 60% less than the normal years. Until August 16 [2009], there have large-scale moderate drought areas in Liaoning, Jilin and eastern Inner Mongolia, serious drought areas in western Jilin, eastern and central Liaoning and southeastern Inner Mongolia.

CMA and all the relevant provincial (autonomous regional) meteorological bureaus have always been paying attention to the drought situation development and its possible influences to agricultural production, strengthening monitoring, forecasting and warning, carefully analyzing and evaluating, making decision-making service data to hand in to Central Party, State Council and the local governments, so as to strive for the drought relief service.

On August 11 [2009], Liaoning Provincial Meteorological Bureau issued level 4 emergency response in 6 cities. On August 13 [2009], Jilin Provincial Meteorological Bureau issued level 3 drought emergency response.

From August 17 to 20 [2009], there will be rainfall process in the drought areas, which will be beneficial for relieving drought situation.
