The Freedom Front Plus (FF Plus) on Friday described the renaming of streets in Pretoria as a "sign of ideological insanity".

"The local ANC's (African National Congress) focus on changing 27 mainly Afrikaans street names is a sign of ideological insanity," said spokesperson Conrad Beyers in a statement.

This, after the city announced on Thursday that 27 street names including Paul Kruger, DF Malan and Vermeulen streets would be renamed.

The party said there were over 14 000 streets within the Pretoria/Tshwane metro area that did not have names. Some of the nameless streets could be found in Soshanguve, Ga-Rankuwa and Mamelodi.

"The FF Plus does not insist that a single street in those areas should be given an Afrikaans name against the wishes of the residents.

"The ANC can name hundreds of those streets after their heroes to their hearts' content, but leave Afrikaner historical names alone," said Beyers. - Sapa
