Below are extracts of an article written by Mikel Lauber and published by WSAW News:

A community organization is dedicating itself to bringing some friends overseas a precious gift that we sometimes take for granted.

The Community Foundation of North Central Wisconsin is looking to build a well to bring clean water to the Maasai people of Kenya.

Two local volunteers saw the need when they visited Kenya, and have since dedicated themselves to finding a solution.

"We're involved because we saw the plight of these people", said Don Ryder, co-founder of the Kenyan Water Project. "We could just not walk away from there and just do nothing about that."

Don Ryder and his partner in the project, Romney Wagner, say the Maasai people walk dozens of miles several times a week for water. And much of that water is contaminated.

They have established the Project to help the Maasai people build a well.

"It would have to go down 800 feet and bring enough water up to serve 5000 people", said Wagner. "They had no way to fund this, so we put our heads together, got with the Community Foundation here in Wausau, and determined to see if we could help raise money to drill this hole for them."

Ryder and Wagner say the Maasai people have a plan for a well, and will provide all the labor for laying the water lines. They just need help funding the project.

About $50,000 out of a needed $112,000 has already been raised.
