A group of pro-Taiwan members of the US House of Representatives has put forward a proposal to set up an "interparliamentary group between Congress and Taiwan's Legislative Yuan" to promote exchanges with Taiwan.

The proposal, initiated by Steve Chabot, a Republican and co-chairman of the Congressional Taiwan Caucus, will be presented to House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert after the required number of signatures are collected.

Officials at Chabot's office said that the US Congress has previously set up several groups with similar purposes, including those promoting exchanges with Israel, Japan, Germany and China.
