The US has launched a diplomatic campaign against the European Union’s move to lift its arms embargo on China.
The Bush administration sees the move, to lift the embargo, as an attempt by French president Chirac to reopen commercial ties to China. The US also suspects that geopolitical intrest are involved while America has strong ties with Taiwan. Some Bush administration officials fear that a rift over China could cool off relations between the US and the EU.
The EU memberstates have yet to agree on a timetable for reconsidering the ban.
