Abkhazia: Visit from UN IDP Officer

Tbilisi (Prime-News) - Walter Kalin, Representative of the UN Secretary-General on the human rights of Internally Displaced Persons visited breakaway republic of Abkhazia on Thursday to meet Sergei Shamba, de facto foreign minister, Abkhazian Apsnipress says.

“Presently the international guarantees and safeguards for non-resumption of hostilities are the priority issues”, Sergei Shamba said at the meeting.

He also admitted that the issue on return of the IDPs in Gali Disticy is being discussed too.

“The UN High Commission for Refugees has drafted two-year plan for return and verification of the IDPs, which includes more detailed information on the returned refugees”, he said.

Discussing the situation in Gali District Sergei Shamba said that “the situation in the district remains tense as the Georgian illegal armed groups were stirring there”.

“The Abkhazian government is interested to maintain order in the district to prevent whole Abkhazia from slipping into tension”, he said.

Walter Kalin thanked the de facto minister for opportunity to visit Abkhazia and highlighted that his visit was for familiarization with the situation.

He also gave high estimation to the peace dialogue saying that he was looking for signing of the highest- level-negotiated document providing for the international guarantees for non-resumption of hostilities.
