15 November – Today Iraq is electing its first full-term government since the fall of the Saddam regime in 2003. General Secretary of the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO) Marino Busdachin, emphasizes the particular significance this day has for the development of democracy in Iraq and for the protection of all minorities in the country.

“It is of a crucial importance that all parts of the Iraqi Peoples participate in a large scale to the vote. This will determine the success of the electoral process” Busdachin says.

UNPO furthermore strongly endorses the appeal by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, who urged Iraqis to vote in what will mark the beginning of a new chapter in Iraq's history. UNPO emphasizes that strengthening democracy constitutes the best instrument to fight terrorism and violence.

Busdachin affirms; “This election signifies a crucial opportunity for Iraq to make a further step on the road toward democracy and a Federal State”. UNPO believes this vote, despite being held in a critical and difficult context, is the only way for the Kurds, the Iraqi Turkmen, the Assyrians, and all the other minorities in the country to move toward freedom and to advance democracy.
