Tatarstan: First Muslim Womens Congress Starts
''Forums like this have not been held in Russia since 1917 and for Kazan it's the first event of its kind," said the deputy head of the spiritual department of Muslims in Tatarstan, Valiulla-khazrat.
Delegates will discuss education, values, the fight against negative phenomena in society and the possibility of cooperation with other organisations.
The autonomous republic of Tatarstan has one of the biggest Islamic communities in the Russian Federation, some 1,000 mosques, a Muslim university and eight Muslim schools.
In the capital there are half a million Muslims, around half
the local population, and a month ago Kazan got a new mosque, one of the biggest
in Europe.
