Tatarstan: First Muslim Womens Congress Starts

The first ever congress of Muslim women in the autonomous republic of Tatarstan is underway in the capital, Kazan. Tatarstan has one of the largest Islamic communities in the Russian Federation. Some 340 women are attending the event, representing more than one million Muslim women in Tartarstan, as well as a hundred or so guests from various cities.

''Forums like this have not been held in Russia since 1917 and for Kazan it's the first event of its kind," said the deputy head of the spiritual department of Muslims in Tatarstan, Valiulla-khazrat.

Delegates will discuss education, values, the fight against negative phenomena in society and the possibility of cooperation with other organisations.

The autonomous republic of Tatarstan has one of the biggest Islamic communities in the Russian Federation, some 1,000 mosques, a Muslim university and eight Muslim schools.

In the capital there are half a million Muslims, around half the local population, and a month ago Kazan got a new mosque, one of the biggest in Europe.
