Genoa, 11 November 2003 - Yesterday afternoon Umar Khanbiev, Health Minister in the Chechen government of Aslan Maskhadov and a member of the General Council of the Transnational Radical Party, visited Genoa on the latest stage of his tour of Italy.
A public meeting, organised by the local Radicals, was held in the Chamber of the Provincial Council. Speakers included Gabriella Mondello, Member of Parliament and Mayor of Lavagna (Forza Italia); Roberto Levaggi, Councillor responsible for the Health Service of the Region of Liguria, who signed the appeal in support of the Akhmadov Peace Plan; Sergio Castellaneta, Member of the Regional Council (elected on the "Liguria Nuova" list) and President of the Medical Association of Genoa; Eugenio Massolo, Member of the Provincial Council of Genoa; Olivier Dupuis, Member of the European Parliament (Radical); Carmelo Palma, Member of the Regional Council of Piedmont (Radical); and Alessandro Rosasco, co-ordinator of the campaign on Chechnya in Genoa. This morning Mr Khanbiev met Sandro Biasotti, President of the Regional Council of Liguria, and Paolo Veardo, Councillor responsible for Social Services and Health of the City of Genoa, who pledged the full support of the City Council in the promotion of the Chechen Peace Plan.
Mr Khanbiev also stipulated a co-operation agreement with the Regional Council for the treatment, in collaboration with the Gaslini Institute of Genoa, of a number of wounded Chechen children currently living in terrible conditions in refugee camps.

At the end of the meetings in the city of Genoa, Mr Khanbiev made the following statement:

"I am moved, though not surprised, by the concern of the local people and institutions at the tragedy of my people, and by their willingness to help. The agreement with the Regional Council of Liguria * which I thank warmly * fills me with joy and confidence, as it provides for the treatment of a number of Chechen children wounded in the conflict and, I hope, will see the active collaboration of the Italian diplomatic authorities."
