The Dalai Lama began a visit to Germany on 16 June to present an award to prominent supporters of the Tibetan people and meet with German politicians.

The Tibetan spiritual leader was to present the Light of Truth award to former Czech President Vaclav Havel and former German minister Otto Graf Lammsdorf.

The third recipient is Irmtraut Waeger, head of the German section of the Washington-based International Campaign for Tibet. The Dalai Lama has presented the awards annually on behalf of the group since 1995.

On Friday, the Dalai Lama was to meet politicians, including members of the Berlin parliament’s human rights committee.

The Dalai Lama has lived in exile in India since a failed Tibetan uprising against the Chinese government in 1959. He now acknowledges Tibet is part of China, but Beijing still views him with suspicion.
