Ogoni: Local Population Commemorates Death of Ogoni 9 and Leader Ken Saro-Wiwa

Even two decades later, the Ogoni people of Nigeria have not forgotten the injustices they had to endure when losing their leader Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other activists, known as the Ogoni 9. Saro-Wiwa had been the President of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP), the organisation which leads the nonviolent campaign against the multinational petroleum industries wreaking havoc in Ogoniland up to this day. In 1995, Saro-Wiwa and his fellow activists had been sentenced to death and then executed during the infamous military dictatorship of late General Sani Abacha. As part of this most recent act of remembrance, Ogoni people marched to the local Court of Appeal to denounce the unjust trial and sentencing of the Ogoni 9 and demanded transparency and truth in the reinvestigation of their military sentencing.
