Chinese authorities use the grossly exaggerated threat of a “mass radicalisation of young Uyghurs” as a pretence to severely curtail religious freedoms of the region’s population. Some of the measures put in place in order to allegedly fight extremism are shown on in the video produced by BBC entitled “No Beard, No Veil”. February 2017, the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO) held a Conference at the European Parliament on this very issue, entitled ‘Chinese Counter-Terrorism Policy:  Impacts and Dangers for Tibetans and Uyghurs’.

Below it is an articles published by BBC:

China says Islamist separatists in Xinjiang are the greatest threat to national security. The far western region is home to a community of some 10 million Uighurs, who are mostly Muslim.

Beijing is concerned that young Uighurs are vulnerable to radicalisation. Widespread intimidation makes reporting from the region extremely difficult, but the BBC gained exclusive access to the area.
