Gagauzia: The Parliament Has Passed Amendments to the RM Constitution

The Joint Commission, consisting of the representatives of the Legislative Organ of the Republic of Moldova and of the Peoples Assembly of Gagauzia has offered the project of amendments to the RM Constitution
Today the Joint Commission, consisting of the representatives of the Legislative Organ of the Republic of Moldova and of the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia has offered the project of amendments to the RM Constitution. According to this document the right of the legislative initiative will be given to the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia alongside with the parliamentaries, the President and the government. An amendment, defining the presence of the autonomous territorial unit and its status has been entered in Article 111 of the Constitution.

The Law, approved in 1994 on a special legal status of Gagauzia, appeared later than the RM Constitution. That is why, the provisions of this document were not reflected in it. “We have legalized the existence of the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia. I consider it to be a very important moment, corresponding to the expectations of the Gagauzian people”, - Parliament Vice-Speaker Vadim Misin, who has presented this document to he Parliamentaries, has declared.
In the opinion of CDPP faction leader, the fact of giving the right of legislative initiative to the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia will bring imbalance into relations between the Central and local authorities. He also considers that this amendment put the Gagauzian people in a privileged position among the other national minorities of the republic.

The parliamentaries have passed the document in the first reading. It is envisaged that the main provision of these amendments will be also embodied in the Constitution, being currently elaborated by the experts of Chisinau and Tiraspol.
