Nagalim: AGP Opposed to Naga Territorial Adjustments

The opposition Asom Gana Parishad pledged to oppose any move on the part of the Centre for making "territorial adjustments" in view of the demand of the NSCN for a "greater Nagaland" during their talks
The opposition Asom Gana Parishad today pledged to oppose any move on the part of the Centre for making "territorial adjustments" in view of the demand of the NSCN (IM) for a "greater Nagaland" during their talks.

In a letter to Union Home minister Shivraj Patil, AGP president Brindabon Goswami said the Naga leaders consistent demand for a "greater Nagalim" consisting of vast tracts of land remaining within the territories of neighbouring Manipur, Arunachal and Assam since the pre-British days is "unfortunate and unjustified".

"We feel seriously disturbed in your reported statement that the Union government during the ongoing parley with Naga leaders might go to the extent of making territorial adjustments if such a step was deemed necessary for permanent solution to the problem", the letter said.

"Although we will be pleased if the four-decade long insurgency problem is solved, we would like to make explicitly clear that we are vehemently opposed to any form of unjustified move to carve out a greater Nagalim at the cost of our territorial integrity", Goswami said.

The AGP chief appealed to the Home Minister to give a serious thought to "this sensitive issue."
