Crimean Tatar: Convicted VP of Mejlis to Be Defended by Savchenko Lawyer


 

Having concluded his case of defending convicted Ukranian pilot Nadezhda Savchenko last month, noted public defender Mr Mark Feygin has taken on the case of supporting the Crimean Tatar Mejlis Vice-Chairman Ilmi Umerov. Umerov had previously been convicted of calling for the violation of territorial integrity of the Russian Federation, according to the Russian and Crimean occupation authorities, initiating a large wave of protests from the Tatar community for what is seen as an unjust sentence.

Russian lawyer Mark Feygin, who advocated the Ukrainian pilot Nadezhda Savchenko in Russian courts will defend the Crimean Tatar people Mejlis Vice-Chairman Ilmi Umerov. “Since today I will be an official defense lawyer of Ilmi Umerov,” posted Feygin in his Facebook.

He recalled that Umerov’s proceedings had been initiated by the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB), charging him with the “public appeals for action aimed at violating the territorial integrity of the Russian Federation”.

Also he added that lawyer Nikolaj Polozov, who defended another Vice-Chairman of the Mejlis Akhtem Chijgoz and the people’s Deputy Mustafa Dzhemilev’s son Khajser Dzhemilev, would be an official defense lawyer too.
