Ogaden People’s Rights Organization Advocacy Visit to the UN in Geneva

On 3 May 2016, UNPO and a delegation of the Ogaden People’s Rights Organization visited Geneva for a round of meetings with UN officials at the Palais des Nations. The objective was to raise awareness of the most recent human rights violations taking place in Ogaden, where the expulsion of aid agencies by the Ethiopian government has only exacerbated the humanitarian catastrophe.

The delegation focused on the case of Ogaden, where civilians have been subjected to systematic human rights violations such as mass murder, torture and rape. More than 400,000 internally displaced civilians have already been reported. Nevertheless, the Ethiopian government has consistently rejected recommendations from UN member states to allow for independent investigations on human rights abuses as well as for humanitarian agencies to work freely in the region.
