Newsletter February 2016

During the month of February UNPO organized a public hearing and advocacy meetings at the Brazilian Congress aimed at drawing attention to the dire need to support Brazil's indigenous peoples, who stand against powerful opponents from the political and economic realm. The public hearing served as a kick-off to a larger international campaign in support of indigenous rights in Brazil. Moreover, UNPO together with three other international NGOs conducted a fact-finding mission to Iraq, with the aim to assess the current state of the country's minority components. The findings of the mission will be presented in a comprehensive report.

UNPO also organized advocacy meetings in Brussels for representatives of the Haratin and Iranian Kurdish communities. The meetings aimed to raise further awareness of the plights of the respective communities and to highlight the need for concrete action to address ongoing human rights violations in Mauritania and Iran.

Finally, UNPO is proud to announce that – thanks to the generous support of all those who donated – we have now reached the crowdfunding goal of $3000 to support the education of Haratin children in Mauritania. Receiving an education will significantly enhance their chances for employment and earning a livelihood.
