While Moscow and the region accounted for the national highest share of undetected murders in 2003, today Karachai-Circassia, Ingushetia, Daghestan leads the list. From 30 to 55 percent of the murder cases remain unsolved today", Prosecutor General Vladimir Ustinov told the collegium of the Russian Prosecutor General's Office.

"Against this background, the 92-95 percent detection of murders in the Chuvash republic, Udmurtia, Tatarstan, the republic of Mary El, the Kirov, Saratov and other regions appears incredible. Behind these figures stand streamlined work of permanent operational investigative groups, thought-out organization and exactingness of public prosecutor's supervision", he added.

All in all, the number of unsolved crimes in the country reached 1,264,000 last year. Among them 5,635 premeditated murder cases, Mr.Ustinov said.

"Hundreds of thousands of criminals have avoided justice", he stated.
