Chittagong Hill Tracts: Villagers Under Attack During Raids


United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) and Reformist group conducted raids in Longadu and in Laxmichari, on 2 and 3 June 2013, illegally searching houses and leaving 3 injured.

On 3 June 2013 at about 1:30 am, an armed group of terrorists numbering 25-28 persons led by Tapan Jyoti Chakma alias Barma of the UPDF group and Apan Chakma of the Reformist group conducted a raid on Kathaltala area under Longadu upazila headquarter of Rangamati Hill District. In this raid, the terrorists searched 4 houses of villagers, bashed 2 students and snatched 2 mobile sets from two other persons.

The two students, victims of heavy beating were identified as Mr. Anup Chakma (25), son of Bhabotosh Chakma, student of grade X of Rabeta High School, Longadu and Mr. Tanoy Chakma (13), son of Bhabotosh Chakma, student of grade VII of Rabeta High School, Longadu.

The terrorists searched the houses of the following persons:

(1) Mr. Bhabotosh Chakma (42), son Jamani Chakma, address- Kathaltala, Longadu upazila headquarter;

(2) Mr. Gyana Jyoti Chakma (56), son of Niru Chakma, address- do, head teacher of Tabolchari Govt. Primary School, Longadu upazila headquarter;

(3) Mr. Smriti Bikash Chakma (37), son of Gunasen Chakma, address- do, assistant teacher of Bara Kattoli Govt. Primary School;

(4) Mr. Riko Chakma (30), son of Ramani Ranjan Chakma, address- do, employee of Family Planning Department of Longadu Hospital.

Moreover, the attackers snatched the mobile sets of Mrs. Sumita Chakma, wife of Bhabotosh Chakma and Mr. Riko Chakma at that time.

On 2 June 2013 at about 2:30 am, an indigenous woman named Sapna Tripura (27), wife of Suklo Marma of village- Dulyotali Bazar Para of Dulyotali union under Laxmichari upazila of Khagrachari Hill District was victim of inhuman beating by UPDF terrorists leaving her severely injured.

It is learnt that at that time an armed group of UPDF terrorists numbering 15 persons led by Suchendra Chakma (32), going to the Dulyotali Bazaar Para, surrounded the house of Mrs. Sapna Tripura, woke the family members up and then started beating Sapna Marma. As a result of heavy beating, Sapna Marma became seriously injured. Due to remoteness of the area, it was not possible to get her admitted to any hospital.
