Crimean Tatars: Mejlis Chairman Visits Europe To Discuss Situation In Crimea


Chairman of the Mejlis of Crimean Tatars met with European representatives to discuss their support for the Day of the Deportation of the Crimean Tatars to be conducted on May 18 in four European capitals: Berlin, Brussels, Hague and Paris. The Deportation Day is dedicated to the 1944 Deportation victims, and has surfaced some resistance from the Crimean officials.

Chairman of the Majlis of Crimean Tatar nation Mustafa Cemil met with representatives of the Crimean Tatar diaspora and leaders of the NGOs in Europe.

After the working visit to Prague, Mustafa Cemil visited Germany by invitation of the Centre for culture and mutual aid of the Crimean Tatars in Europe.

An aim of the M. Cemil’s visit is to explain to the Turkish diaspora in Europe, which is not indifferent to the Crimean Tatars’ fate, and the Crimean Tatar diaspora the current situation in Crimea, to tell about a pressure on the Crimean Tatars, attempts of the authorities to meddle to hold the mourning meeting dedicated to the Day of the Deportation of the Crimean Tatars on May 18.

Thus, Mr. M. Cemil visited the central office of the Federation of Turks in Frankfurt. He told about the current situation in Crimea and requested to support the mourning meetings dedicated to the Day of the Deportation of the Crimean Tatars that would be conducted in four European capitals: Berlin, Brussels, Hague and Paris. These events will be organized by the Centre of culture and mutual aid of the Crimean Tatars in Europe on May 18.

In Köln the Crimean Tatar delegation visited the “Islamic society. National View”. After that they met with representatives of the media, leaders of the Crimean Tatar diaspora, Turkic NGOs of Europe at the dinner. Mustafa Cemil called everybody to participate in events dedicated to the memory of the Deportation’s victims that will take place in the European capitals.

The Head of the Centre for culture and mutual aid of the Crimean Tatars in Europe Rafet Karanlık and the Representative of the Majlis of Crimean Tatar nation in Germany Ahmet Özay thanked to participants for their participation and expressed the hopes they would support events dedicated to the 1944 Deportation’s victims.
