In efforts to minimise environment degradation in the Islands and mitigate negative impacts of climate change, Zanzibar has resumed its campaign to distribute cooking gas free of charge to its residents.

The campaign being implemented under 'Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD) - Hifadhi ya Misitu ya Asili (HIMA) project - targets to give gas to at least 7,000 households on Unguja and Pemba islands.

Mr Sheha Hamdani, Director of Department of Forestry and Non-Renewable Natural Resources in the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources, said about 2,300 families have so far received the gas and that the project started early last year but stalled later.

"We are resuming giving out gas this April [2013], because we have the funds. About 312m/- has been allocated for the HIMA project which include supply of gas, patrols to stop cutting down of trees, encouraging the planting of trees including cloves and trees which bear fruits," said Hamdani.

He said the four-year HIMA project which ends next year, is a pilot project focusing on reducing greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation and degradation in Zanzibar and generate carbon income which will provide direct and equitable incentives to communities to conserve forests sustainably.

"We are promoting a pro-poor gender-equitable approach to community forest management in Zanzibar. About 27,650 ha of forest (community upland forest and mangrove forest) in both the Islands of Unguja and Pemba will be protected.

"The objective is to scale-up to at least 60,000 ha of forest in Zanzibar. Individual people, environmental groups and the government have been motivated to protect forests and plants more trees," he added.
