Russian emergency teams have successfully completed a radiation clean-up in Abkhazia. They have removed hundreds of tons of radioactively contaminated soil from this South Caucasus country.

Abkhaz President Alexander Ankvab announced this to members of Russia’s Public Chamber at a meeting in Suhum on Monday.

The contaminated spots and cisterns containing radioactive liquids were discovered in the 1990s after Abkhazia won its independence war with Georgia.
