Six months after the publication of the report by the Committee on the Niger Delta, few measures have been taken.

Former militants in the Niger Delta region have called on the Federal Government to begin the full implementation of the recommendations of the report of the Technical Committee on the Niger Delta headed by the immediate past President of the Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP), Mr. Ledum Mitee.

Addressing journalists in Port Harcourt, yesterday, President of the Niger Delta Ex-Agitators Forum (NDEF), Comrade Prince Amaibi Hornby, said the amnesty programme, currently being implemented by the Federal Government was just one out of 18 recommendations submitted to the Presidency by the Mitee-led committee.

Hornby stated that the government had failed the people of the Niger Delta by failing to implement other recommendations of the committee, while trying to probe the Amnesty programme, which is the only programme that has brought peace to the region.

He said; “They want to probe the Amnesty Committee, to me, I say it is a lie because, the Federal Government has failed us. How did they fail us? The committee before Amnesty, led by Ledum Mitee, when you go through the recommendations of the committee, you will find out that amnesty is not among the first 10 on the list.”

“For this reason, we are advising the National Assembly to think of the rest of the Ledum Mitee-led committee recommendation because the amnesty programme is the only one of the numerous recommendations that is working.”
