A half-day blockade on road and waterway has been observed peacefully in Dighinala upazila of Khagracharhi district and Baghaicharhi upazila of Rangamati district.

Monday's blockade was to protest the recent attack on hill people and death of a woman belonging to the indigenous community -- Chigonmila Chakma.

Bengali settlers had allegedly attacked Chigonmila at Kobakhali on Dec 14 after the body of a Bengali motorcyclist, identified as Abdus Sattar, was recovered from Baghaicharhi the previous day.

She later succumbed to injuries.

Democratic Youth Forum, Pahari Chhatra Parishad and the Hill Women's Federation enforced Monday's blockade. All three organisations of the hill people are associated to the United People's Democratic Front (UPDF).

In a statement issued later in the day, Dighinala and Baghaicharhi unit chief of UPDF Shanti Dev Chakma thanked the people and all transport owners' associations for making the protest a success. He alleged that the attack on the indigenous people was preplanned to evict them from the Chittagong Hill Tracts.

The UPDF leader demanded immediate arrest and exemplary punishment to Chigonmila's killers. He also sought necessary steps to stop the attack on indigenous people.

Khagracharhi circle assistant police superintendent Al Asad Mahfuzul Islam said the blockade was observed peacefully in Dighinala and no report of unpleasant incident was reported.
