Somaliland: Scholarship Opportunity Announced for Young Women

Due to low female enrollment in institutions of higher education, Hargeisa has launched a program that makes education an opportunity for young woman from low-income families.  Funds for the scholarship have been donated by the EU and UNICEF donors.

Below is an article published by Somaliland Press:

Somaliland Ministry of Higher Education launches free education for low income female students whose parents cannot afford the small tuition fee. This program which is funded by the European Union (EU) and UNICEF is expected to increase the number of young girls attending schools in the country.

According to the ministry of education Ms. Samsam Abdi Adan the program will begin at the end of this month [November 2011] and also that her ministry will oversee the implementation of the project. Ms. Adan disclosed this new initiative at a press conference that she held at her office as she said “we inform the public at large that there is an educational opportunity for all girls in Somaliland regardless of family income, the European Union funded the project and UNICEF had facilitate in finding funds for the project from EU.”

The scholarship will support young girls who cannot pay their school fees during these difficult economic times that Somaliland citizens are facing.  Female students are encouraged to submit applications to their regional education offices in Somaliland in order to take advantage of this opportunity. She added that all regions in Somaliland will benefit from this wonderful opportunity and will pave the way for underprivileged families. Today’s announcement from the Minister of Education is seen as positive news as most Somaliland parents are not able to pay the minimum fee required of each student during the school year.
