The Supreme Court of the breakaway province of Abkhazia may order new elections soon, Interfax news agency said Friday.

Abkhazia is a secessionist province of the former Soviet republic of Georgia in the Caucasus and on the coast of the Black Sea. The province's own Supreme Court is seeking to end a period of political turmoil by ordering new elections to be held across the territory, Interfax said.

The court is expected soon to announce the second round of presidential elections or call new elections across the entire republic, sources close to a continuing Supreme Court session told the news agency.

"The Supreme Court has all the necessary materials to make a legal decision to hold the second round of the elections or call new elections across the whole of Abkhazia," one official told Interfax. "This decision will help put an end to the republic's political crisis," he said
