Unveiling of the monument for the World Peace Flame in The Hague

UNPO, at the invitation of the Mayor and Aldermen of The Hague, on 18 April 2002, attended the unveiling of the monument for the World Peace Flame in front of the Peace Palace in The Hague.

The World Peace Flame is an initiative of Life Foundation International, a group of health professionals working in war zones and everyday life to promote the use of self-help approaches for physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well being in every aspect of living.

Several eminent people participated in the ceremony, including Princess Irene of the Dutch Royal family, Dr. Mansukh Patel, Co-founder of the Life Foundation, Drs. Wim Deetman, Mayor of The Hague, and UNPO representative David Broekman met with Dr. Patel and staff members of the Life Foundation International Course Centre (based in Wales, the UK) during the reception afterwards.
Dr. Patel was keen to learn about the UNPO’s commitment to human rights protection and promotion, and praised the organization for its stance on change through non-violent means. According to Dr. Patel this was the first World Peace Flame monument to be established in the world, aiming at catalysing a world wide paradigm shift from thinking about problems (violence; war; repression) to acting out solutions.

Reminding us of the essential freedom of the human spirit to create peace at any time under any circumstances, the flame symbolises a powerful dream that can become reality in time.
