MOVEMENT for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) has called for the unconditional release of the lawmaker representing Gokana/Khana Federal Constituency in the House of Representative, Emmanuel Deeyah, who was abducted by gunmen shortly after the postponement of the National Assembly elections at the weekend.

The gunmen also killed Deeyah’s aide yesterday at his home town, Gwara in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State.

MOSOP, which made this known in a statement signed by its President, Ledum Mitee, condemned the killing and abduction, stressing that violence should not go with politics, just as it called on security personnel to secure his release, and get those behind it.

Said Mitee: “We insist that politics should not be played with acts of violence or any intimidating tendencies, but must allow space for even opposing views, which to us is the hallmark of democracy.

“

It is regrettable that today we pride ourselves as being in a democracy, but democracy is not just all about elections. It is the tolerance of opposing views without recourse to violence. That is the most important attribute of democracy.”

He also called on Ogoni people and the general public to provide information of any kind that would help in securing his release”.
