Gilgit Baltistan: Regional Languages to be Given Due Time on PTV


After a talk with the Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, the Gilgit Baltistan Chief Minister was promised more exposure of regional languages in national media.

Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan said on Saturday [February 19, 2011] that the government attaches great importance to uplift the regional languages. That is why PTV has started regional languages channels.

Dr Firdous expressed these views while speaking to Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) Chief Minister Syed Mehdi Shah who called on her here for discussing matters pertaining to his province.

The Chief Minister GB urged the federal minister to take effective steps for improving PTV network coverage in the province. He requested her for setting up proper directorate of Press Information Department, Pakistan Television and bureau office of Associated Press of Pakistan in Gilgit like other provinces of the country.

Mehdi Shah also asked for giving due time to the regional languages of Gilgit-Baltistan in news bulletins, current affairs and other programmes.

Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan assured the chief minister to visit the area soon for getting firsthand knowledge about the problems faced by GB and said due time would be given to the regional language of GB on PTV.  

She said that the PPP government under the leadership of President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani was fully committed to resolve all issues confronting Gilgit-Baltistan (GB).
