Somaliland: MEP Congratulates the holding of Free, and Fair Democratic Elections
I am writing to congratulate you on your recent victory in Somaliland’s presidential election. As a strong supporter of Somaliland and its people I was very pleased that the election was held peacefully, and was judged by observers to adhere to internationally recognized standards. The conduct of this election does enormous credit to Somaliland and to you and your fellow candidates.
Your election to the presidency marks the start of the next chapter in Somaliland’s democratic story. Having met you last year at an event organized for my own election campaign by the West London Somaliland community, I know that you are deeply committed to Somaliland’s future and the aspirations of its people. I have no doubt that you will face many challenges ahead as you assume this role but I hope that you will be mindful that Somaliland has many supporters throughout the world who will continue to support the development of a democratic, progressive and prosperous Somaliland under your guidance and leadership.
The successful candidate of the presidential election also compels the international community to take notice of your country’s achievements and to reward your commitment to peace and democracy. There seems to be growing international consensus that Somaliland’s progress needs to be reinforced and rewarded through official re-recognition, and I hope this consensus continues to strengthen under your new administration. For my part, I will do all I can to highlight Somaliland’s achievements in my new capacity as a member of the European Parliament, and I look forward to continuing my support for Somalilanders living in London, my constituency.
I look forward to visiting Somaliland in due course and I hope we will have a chance to meet again.
