Balochistan: 40 Injured in Student Clashes

 More than 40 students were injured in clashes between two ethnic groups of students in four different educational institutions of Balochistan on Monday May 17th 2010

Initially, a clash erupted at the Agriculture College Quetta between activists of the Baloch Students Organisation and the Pashtun Students Organisation over a petty issue, in which 17 students were injured as they used sticks and knuckle dusters against each other, police said.

Police and law enforcement agencies rushed to the college and evacuated it, bringing the situation under control.

Another fight broke out between activists of the same organisations at the University of Balochistan (UoB), which injured four students, as news of the clash at the Agriculture College reached them.

The injured students were taken to the Sandman Hospital Quetta and Bolan Medical Hospital.

Frontier Corps (FC) and police personnel rushed to the university and had to resort to shelling to disperse the students. Police have arrested eight students for disrupting peace, the sources added.

Also, a clash erupted between students of the Lasbela University of Marine Sciences and Balochistan University of Engineering and Technology Khuzdar, in which 25 students were injured.

Police and security personnel have been deployed in all major educational institutions to maintain peace.

Three days: The UoB administration has announced the suspension of academic activities in the university for three days, while hostels have been closed down for an indefinite period following the clashes. Balochistan Agricultural College and University of Engineering and Technology Khuzdar have been closed down for an indefinite period.
