President Dahir Rayale Kahin today [5th October] held a consultation meeting with the two leaders of Somaliland’s main opposition parties about the six point agreement sponsored by western donor countries that provide support for the on-going democratization and electoral process in Somaliland.

Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud Silanyo of KULMIYE and Faisal Ali Warabe of UCID had discussions with the president about the benchmarks and conditions as well as the need for both sides to fully implement the agreement and to resolve any disagreement through open communication and consultation.

The trilateral meeting was held in a cordial atmosphere, mutual understanding and goodwill and the outcome was broadly positive, according to the presidential spokesman, Saeed Addani.
It was agreed that open communication, dialogue and regular consultations of this kind to continue in order to speed up the implementation until such time a free and fair election is held in the country.

Until recently, there was a serious dispute between the ruling party and the opposition parties because the president was insisting to hold the presidential election planned for 28 September without voter registration list contrary to the Electoral Law of the country. The opposition rejected to participate in any election without voter registration list.

The ruling party and the opposition parties last week signed an agreement brokered by Western donors following heightened political tension in the country.
