UNPO Commemorates Bashar Hamid MP

Statement by UNPO General Secretary Mr. Busdachin concerning the Assasination of Mr. Hamid

One week has passed since Mr. Bashar Hamid was laid to rest after being fatally shot outside his home in Mosul.  The assassination is the most recent to shake Iraq’s political establishment, and the latest to target politicians from the north of Iraq.

The UNPO condemns the killing of an elected representative whose death has been the latest tragic reminder of the insecurity in Iraq and the targeting of those trying to make democracy and participation a daily reality for all Iraqi citizens.

Mr. Hamid had been due to participate in a conference convened by UNPO and partners this month – a conference that would have discussed solutions to the instability in the north of Iraq.  But it will be in remembrance of Mr. Hamid that this conference will be held later this year.

I know that UNPO’s Members are united in their wish to convey to the family of Mr. Hamid, and in particular to his widow and two children, our most sincere condolences at this time.
