Taiwan has sent its congratulations to Democratic Party of Japan which has won a landslide election in a historic shift in power.

Foreign ministry spokesman Chen Ming-cheng said on Monday that Taiwan will continue to strengthen its ties with Japan.

"We have sent our congratulations to the Democratic Party of Japan which will soon take power. Meanwhile, we will continue to maintain our friendly ties with the Liberal Democratic Party," said Chen.

Chen said he is optimistic about bilateral ties in the future. However, ruling party lawmakers said while there is no need to worry about future relations, the new Japanese government's policy towards China and the United States could have an impact on Taiwan.

The leader of the Democratic Party of Japan, Yukio Hatoyama, is expected to become Japan's new prime minister. His party's win brings to an end more than half a century of Liberal Democratic Party rule in Japan.
