UNPO Guide to Kurdistan Elections

The UNPO has produced a comprehensive guide to the Kurdistan elections set to take place on Saturday 25 July 2009. After plans for a referendum on the Kurdistan constitution were postponed to August 2009, the July 25 2009 election will focus on electing representatives to the Kurdistan Parliament of Iraq and the election of the Kurdistani president.

Under current measures, the Kurdistan Parliament of Iraq have reserved seats for minority communities, of which, the Assyrians and Turkmen have been reserved 5 seats respectively, and the Armenian community have one reserved seat.

UNPO Election Monitoring Team members will assess the conduct of the elections in those polling centres with sizable minority communities within their catchment areas, publishing their findings in a report to be made public after the close of elections.

In advance of the 25 July 2009 elections however, UNPO has published a comprehensive guide to the background, electoral process, candidates and parties and key issues that emanate from this important democratic process.
