UNPO General Secretary condemns racist violence
against Uyhgur workers in Guangdong Province

The Hague – 3 July, 2009

The Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO) condemns in the strongest possible terms the recent acts of violence against Uyghur workers in the Guangdong Province of the People's Republic of China (PRC).

The mob killing of two Uyghur workers and the injuring of many, mostly female, workers at a toy factory in Guangdong Province in the early  hours of Friday, June 26 2009 is the most recent manifestation of a growing racism within the PRC that stems from the discriminatory ethnic, labour, and religious policies sown over the past fifty years.

The UNPO views these actions, and the failure of the Chinese authority to intervene to prevent the loss of life, as serious violations of the human rights of Uyghurs in the PRC and reinforces UNPO's fears for the daily safety and wellbeing of Uyghurs in East Turkestan.

The UNPO therefore urges diplomatic representations  and international organizations in the PRC to join with UNPO members in publicly voicing their concern over the incident and to  investigate the circumstances in which two lives were needlessly lost and countless others injured.
