Below is an article based on a story published by The International News:

Baltistan has been given divisional status that will enter into power the first day of July [2009]. The president of the Pakistan People’s Party of Gilgit-Baltistan, Mehdi Shah, and the chairman of the District Council of Skardu, Raja Jalal, disclosed this on Tuesday [22 June 2009].

Last month [May 2009], the Federal Minister for Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan Affairs, Qamar Zaman Kaira, installed a commissioner system in the region. He then visited both President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani, who endorsed the step taken by him.

According to Mehdi, the new status will increase the effectiveness of the government. He stated that in future, people will not have to go to Gilgit for petty matters rather that they  would be resolved at their door steps. The incumbent government under the leadership of Asif Ali Zardari and Yusuf Raza Gilani is all set to announce a comprehensive political, administrative and financial package. The reforms will bring a positive change in the prevailing system by empowering people and their representatives.
