The Earth Hour [28 March 2009] was observed all over the country. Nagaland, in the far-east took the lead in observing the Earth Hour. The states of the far-east in India are largely dependent on natural resources and have been largely affected by climate change.

Hekali Zhimomi, the Director of North East Zone Culture Centre said that the protection and conservation of natural resources was required for the survival of Nagas. If adequate measures were not taken against climate change, the natural resources would be destroyed very shortly.

The Dimapur Municipal Council organized a programme at the City Tower junction at 6.00 pm [28 March 2009]. This was followed by the switching off the lights from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm [28 March 2009]. The aim of the Earth Hour was to create an awareness in the Nagas towards this noble cause. Besides prominent dignitaries, contestants of the Indian Idol and Naga Idol were present.
