Below is an article published by the UNPO:

Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs Franco Frattini told Italian Newsagency ANSA that the issue of hosting former Guantanamo detainees was raised by Italy and the UK at the informal meeting of Ministers of Foreign Affairs held on 8 January 2009 in Prague.

In December 2008, Mr. Frattini, said in response to a question tabled by Marco Perduca, UNPO treasurer and Senator for the Radical Party in Rome that Italy had never been approached by Portugal or the US with regards to the matter. In a statement issued on the 8th January 2009 whilst in The Hague, Mr. Perduca urged the Italian Government to formally introduce the issue of the Guantanamo former prisoners as an agenda item for the next Council of the European Union General Affairs and External Relations Council (GAERC) meeting to take place in Brussels on 26 and 27 January 2009.
