Taiwan: Permission Granted to Combat Climate Change

Taiwan has been approved for participation in the global campaign against climate change despite not being a member of the UN.

Below is an article published by Radio Taiwan International:

The United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) has confirmed that Taiwan's cities and companies can apply to join the newly established Climate Neutral Network.

UNEP's statement came on Friday [22 February 2008] in an interview with Taiwan's Central News Agency. The decision paved the way for Taiwan, which is not a UN member, to participate in the global campaign against climate change. However, the UNEP did not say whether Taiwan can join the program at the national level.

Under the UNEP, Climate Neutral Network will integrate countries, cities and companies across the world to boost a green economy. Climate neutral is the concept of reducing or offsetting greenhouse emission in ways such as planting trees, reducing fuel usage and adopting green energy, to balance the global warming effect.

So far, Taiwan's foreign ministry and the Environmental Protection Administration have reserved comments on Taiwan's participation in the program.
