The Chinese government has arrested six pro-Tibetan student activists for protesting against the Chinese presence in Tibet, the Students group for a Free Tibet (SFT) said Tuesday [08 August 2007].

The group said in a news release that the protesters unfurled a huge banner reading “One World, One Dream, Free Tibet 2008” in English and Chinese from the Great Wall. The police removed the activists after two hours, whose current whereabouts are unknown.

SFT executive director Lhadon Tethong said in her blog from Beijing that the protesters included two Canadians, one U.K resident, and three from the U.S.

The banner with three additional words — Free Tibet 2008 — to the official slogan of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, was displayed on Tuesday [08 August 2007], on which the one-year countdown for the Olympics started. The SFT group has posted in the blog and YouTube a video of the banner being hung from the Great Wall to attract worldwide attention.
