The survey, financially backed by the United Nations Development Programme, is expected to last four months, according to reports reaching here on Tuesday [12 June 2007].

The survey aims at finding out radio/TV coverage and strength of frequencies on the Indian Ocean archipelago.

"Other objectives of the study include finding out listeners and viewers preferences, to have an update on statistics of viewers and listeners," said Saidi Bakari, chairperson of the Zanzibar Broadcasting Commission.

"We are conducting a research to find out the media behaviors of Zanzibar as well," said the government official.

The United Nations Development Programme has pledged to cover 70 percent of the cost of the survey which is estimated to cost 65 million Tanzanian shillings (52,000 U.S. dollars) in all.

A total of 600 households in 44 selected areas will be surveyed. Zanzibar has a total number of households of 200,000.
