Zanzibar: Festival to Honor Slavery's End

Celebrating the cultural heritage of the peoples of East African and Asian countries, with the 10th Zanzibar Film Festival and a special award of $ 10,000 to the best film of slavery.

Below is an article published by Variety:

The 200th anniversary of the abolition of slavery will be in focus at the 10th Zanzibar Film Festival (June 29-July 8), to be held on the Indian Ocean island, which was a key part of the slave route and contains several memorials to the slave trade.

UNESCO and the fest will present a special award of $10,000 to a film that best discusses issues of slavery, historical and contemporary. A day of focus on the slave trade will include a tour of slave route sites for delegates, a discussion of slavery and a film screening.

The Festival of the Dhow countries, as the fest is commonly known, celebrates the cultural heritage of the peoples of East African and Asian countries surrounding the Indian Ocean and their diaspora in the West.

Fest chief executive Martin Mhando said the event would again be a celebration of the plurality of world cultures through the medium of film, and the credo of the festival, Celebration of Water and Dreams, had a strong link with the commemoration of the abolition of slavery.
