Solomon Islands: Aid Still Not Received

More than a week after an earthquake and tsunami struck the Solomon Islands rescue teams are still struggling to reach those communities in remote areas.

Below is an article published by Radio New Zealand International:

More than a week after an earthquake and tsunami struck Solomon Islands rescue teams are still struggling to reach some of those affected.

The premier of Solomons’ Western Province, Alex Lokopio, says a lack of suitable transport has meant some parts of the region have been hard to reach.

He says organising the onward movement of supplies from main ports in the Solomons has proved difficult to organise.

But Mr Lokopio says now that supplies and transport have arrived in Gizo, he is hopeful people in remote areas can receive assistance within one to two days.

The Shortland Islands, which are close to Bougainville, have still not received any substantial aid.

But Mr Lokopio says vessels will be under way soon:

“That area has yet to be given assistance, a few food and supplies have been dropped by aircraft and helicopter, but they need more food and water and shelter so think one or two ships will be leaving now to travel to the Shortland Islands.”

Mr Lokopio says the island of Vella Lavella, which is one of the big island in Western Province, is also just receiving adequate supplies.
